My Favourite Wonders
When Thunder Bay hosted the Jeux Canada Summer Games in 1981, my sister Kathryn and I were involved in the dance routine for both the opening and closing cermonies for the Games. The main attraction in our ceremonies was the waking of the Giant and the Giant going back to sleep when the Games were over. I remember volunteering with my mom at the College handing out to the athletics their welcome packages. It was 10 years old, so it was neat meeting all these different people from across Canada. In the recent CBC contest to pick the 7 Wonders of Canada, Thunder Bay's Sleeping Giant was the most voted wonder but in the end the judges decided we weren't one of the 7 (but it is one of the 15 wonders). For those energetic hikers, you can climb to the Sleeping Giant chimney via the Sibley Provincial Park.
Someone told me during my visit, that this is the most rain that Thunder Bay has received for the month of June. With that, the Kakabeka Falls was at its best - just like what you expect during the spring runoff in early May. Our little Niagara Falls surely did not disappoint the tourists that stopped by that day I was there. I will agree with other Canadians - The Rockies and its beauty is deserving to be one of our 7 wonders of Canada, but I must say when my friend Sandy and I travelled through the Rockies, there were these falls called - Athabasta Falls (near Jasper), when we saw them we both commented it looked like Kakabeka Falls. When I compared my two photos - I found Kakabeka Falls left me more in awe of its power. It is neat what you find in your backyard. How fortunate (for many reasons) to be able to live in Canada. My friend Darlyne said that it is fun every once in a while to play the "tacky tourist" within your city - you never know what you find around the next corner. Plus when you have great friends to do it with.
