Happy Canada Day!!!
Today, Canada celebrates its 140 birthday - July 1, 1867. It is relatively a young country when you compare it to Europe or even the United States (who celebrate their independence day on July 4).
This past Spring the CBC held a contest to name the 7 wonders of Canada. The Canadian Rockies was one of those wonders. I have been lucky in the past to travel different parts of Canada, most recently a road trip from Calgary to Jasper and back. Driving through the Canadian Rockies was quite an experience. The views from the base of the mountains and to the tops (thanks to gondolas) are simply awesome. I think I had mentioned in previous blog entries - in 2002 I travelled from Charlottetown, PEI to Halifax, Nova Scotia via the Cabot Trail. To me, it is another wonder of Canada - spectular views of the ocean mixed with the switchback roads hugging the mountains. Being from Thunder Bay, Ontario, it was awesome to see that one of our landmarks - The Sleeping Giant was the most voted wonder by us - Canadians. The 3 judges had the final decision, we made it to the Top 15 of the original 100. So if you are ever driving from coast to coast you will hit Thunder Bay as it is near the middle of Canada. Plus just passed Thunder Bay westward is Kakabeka Falls - it is our little Niagara Falls. Of course, for most Canadians, the Terry Fox Momunment is a must stop attraction. With his one dream of running across Canada for Cancer Research, it brought communities together and still does to this day every third Sunday of September - The Terry Fox Run is held across Canada and around the world raising the awareness of Cancer Research in our communities but it also keeps Terry Fox memory alive in all of us. If you believe in your dreams - anything can be accomplished. Quite Awesome in my books.
