U-Shaped Valley

This was a view as we hiked back - this is called an U-shaped valley. According to a hiking book, the original valleys in the Rockies were V-shaped but with glacial ice advances it undercut the adjoining mountains causing them to collapse creating these U-shaped valleys. Do you know another name for U-shaped valleys? They are also called troughs.
